What do Post Only and Time in Force do?
On a limit order in the Advanced Trading widget, a single dropdown holds both Post Only and the Time in Force options. Post Only controls whether your order is allowed to take liquidity; Time in Force controls how long it stays active.
Post Only
Choose Post Only to make sure your order is added to the order book as a maker order, rather than filling immediately as a taker. If the order would fill right away (taking liquidity), the exchange rejects it instead of executing it. This is useful when you want the maker fee and are happy to wait for the market to reach your price.
Post Only applies to Limit and Stop Limit orders; it has no effect on Market or Stop Market orders, which always take liquidity.
Time in Force
Time in Force sets how long a limit order stays active:
- GTC (Good Till Cancelled): stays on the order book until it fully fills or you cancel it. Partial fills are kept, and the rest waits.
- IOC (Immediate or Cancel): fills whatever it can right now, then cancels the rest. Partial fills are kept.
- FOK (Fill or Kill): must fill completely and immediately, or the whole order is cancelled. No partial fills.
Finding them
Both are in the same dropdown on the order form in the Advanced Trading widget — Post Only sits in the list alongside the Time in Force options (GTC, IOC, FOK). If you don’t see the dropdown, switch the widget to Advanced with the Widget Mode setting.
In a smart position
In a smart position, Post Only and Time in Force apply only to the first entry order — not to the take-profit, stop-loss, or any additional entry orders.
