IP whitelisting explained
Altrady recently upgraded its IP infrastructure to improve stability and cut down on geo-IP errors. Because of this, if you have live trading accounts connected to an exchange, you’ll need to update the IP whitelist on your exchange API keys so Altrady can keep talking to your exchange without interruption.
This article explains what IP whitelisting is, why it matters, and how to update it safely. The exact steps are different for every exchange, so once you’ve read this, jump to the guide for your specific exchange below.
What is an IP whitelist?
When you create an API key on an exchange, most exchanges let you (or require you to) restrict that key so it only works from specific IP addresses. This is called an IP whitelist. It’s a security feature: even if someone stole your API key, they couldn’t use it unless they were also connecting from one of the whitelisted IP addresses.
Altrady connects to your exchange from its own set of IP addresses. When Altrady’s infrastructure changes, those addresses can change too, which is why you may occasionally need to refresh the whitelist on your exchange API keys.
Your funds stay safe
Altrady only ever requests read and trade permissions on your API keys. Altrady can view your balances and place or manage orders on your behalf, but it can never withdraw funds from your exchange account. Updating your IP whitelist does not change this; it only affects which IPs are allowed to use the key at all.
The most important rule: edit, never delete
Before you touch anything, keep this in mind:
Important: Always edit your existing Altrady Trading Account. Do not delete it or create a new one.
If you delete a Trading Account in Altrady, all of its trade history and position data is permanently and irretrievably lost. If you’re replacing or updating an API key, always go into your existing Trading Account and edit it, never delete it and never create a fresh one for an exchange you’re already connected to.
How to update your IP whitelist (general steps)
- Go to the exchange’s website and find your API key management page.
- Follow your exchange’s specific guide (linked below) to update the IP whitelist on that key, using Altrady’s current IP addresses.
- In Altrady, go to Settings > Exchange API Keys, find the matching Trading Account, and click Edit.
- If you generated a brand-new key on the exchange, paste the new API key and secret into the existing Trading Account. If you only updated the whitelist on your current key, no key change is needed.
- Save your changes.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if I delete my Trading Account in Altrady?
All trade history and position data tied to it is permanently deleted. Don’t do this unless you’re absolutely sure you no longer need that data. If you’re replacing an API key, edit the existing Trading Account instead.
I created a new API key on the exchange: do I need a new Trading Account in Altrady?
No. Go to Settings > Exchange API Keys, find your existing Trading Account, and click Edit. Paste the new API key and secret there. Only create a new Trading Account if you’re connecting a brand new exchange or a different exchange account.
My key was created using Fast Connect or a third-party connection: why can’t I edit the IP whitelist?
These keys are generated automatically by the exchange with pre-filled permissions and whitelists, and most exchanges won’t let you edit the IP list on them afterward. In this case, manually create a new API key on the exchange instead, then paste it into your existing Altrady Trading Account.
My Spot and Futures accounts use the same API key. What should I do?
Update the IP whitelist for the first account following your exchange’s guide. Note the first few IP addresses shown in the new whitelist. Then edit the second Trading Account in Altrady and click Refresh repeatedly until the IP whitelist shown matches. Click Update to apply that whitelist to the second Trading Account.
What if I have extra keys attached to my original Trading Account?
Some exchanges (Crypto.com, HTX/Huobi, Poloniex and Kraken, among others) often have more than one API key associated with a single account. Every API key on the exchange needs to be updated with the same new IP whitelist.
Can I create my new API key using Fast Connect?
No. Fast Connect is only meant for setting up brand new exchange connections. Using it to replace an existing key will create a new Trading Account in Altrady that is not linked to your existing trading history or positions. If you’re replacing an existing key, instead: manually create a new key on the exchange (or use the exchange’s third-party connection method if available, since this can automatically apply Altrady’s IP addresses), then edit your existing Trading Account in Altrady and paste in the new key and secret.
Where to find the whitelist on your exchange
Each exchange keeps its IP whitelist setting on the API key page. The connection guide for your exchange under Connecting Your Exchange shows exactly where it is and how to paste in Altrady’s addresses.
